About being a mum with girls doing competitive sports

Just want to pen down some thoughts about my journey so far, trying my very best to be a mum with kids doing sports competitively.

I went with WL to her bowling competition for the first time last year December to the "23rd Storm U22 International Junior All-stars" in KL.

It was a mind-blowing and life-changing experience for me. We went there with a holiday mood, thinking we could use this as an opportunity to relax and celebrate post-psle. Little did we know the 3-day competition would be so physically and mentally draining. We thought, she only need to play 3 MQs per day, but 1MQ is 3 games, so it's 9 games per day, and this will take the entire day and sometimes we have to skip meal, or just have finger food beside the lane. By the 2nd day, she was already so physically drained, and her hands can't do anything as the thumb and finger tips are covered with painful blisters. Having almost zero knowledge about the sport, we had to search up google and youtube to find ways to help her with her blisters late at night after her games, the most heart-wrenching part is to see her pressed on with her injuries and continue to bowl on the last day. We were both pleasantly surprised that she didn't cry or give up, and even managed to play one of her best results in the last day (given that she's usually such a baby when it comes to pain and difficulties)

This was my first experience to see how it is like to be in competitive sports. And seeing how other parents support their kids, made me realised how ignorant and handicapped I was. As an extreme introvert, I didn't know any other parents whose kids are in bowling, I also didn't made any effort to know the coach well enough to be able to ask for help when we needed. Now I know, parents support group is so important, as most parents are so friendly and helpful to share their experience and knowledge about the sport. Talking to some of the parents made me realise how little I know about the sport, how much we could do to help our kids become better in the sports they like. Knowing the coach personally, and even better know more than one coach in a big event will help so much, when emergency like injury or accident happens. So I secretly made a promise to myself, I would force myself to be out of my comfort circle to know more parents and also build a good relationship with the coaches.

Just a few days after coming back from the KL bowling event, YL started her competitive swimming class. We signed up without much expectations, we just wanted to start her training to see how far she can go, and how fast she can swim. WL trained for half a year without seeing much results, we assumed training takes time. With my new-gained experience in the bowling competition, I thought I was mentally prepared and was ready to be a supportive mum to YL in her new endeavour.

Just after her first trial lesson, Coach asked her to sign up for the coming "Swim Series" in Jan and Feb. To prepare for that, he recommended her to train at least 3 times a week. Thinking it'll be a short term arrangement for the event, we agreed. After the first "Swim Series I 2024" in Jan, Coach recommended her to go into their Elite Squad. It all happened so quickly, and honestly till now I still feel overwhelmed. I had to spend hours in front of my computer researching on the different events which will happen across the whole year, the different requirement for each event, and the purpose of the many different equipments that I had never even heard of before. (now my youtube feed includes different videos of "tips of how to swim xx stroke", my newsfeed includes swimming results from US too 😅)

So now, WL trains 3 times a week, 2 times with school, 1 time with her Coach. YL will be training 5 times a wk, 4 times with the elite squad, 1 time with her coach. So much time is put into training, sometimes i will wonder whether it is worth it. The amount of time and money invested in the sports, coach fees, equipment costs, attire cost, registrations for the events so on and so forth... are they really worth it?

In this fast paced world, we are so used to expect results for every effort we put in. I realised, this is not possible in the competitive sports world.

We were encouraged by WL's coach, that they see potential in WL for her bowling. After half a year of training, and getting all the equipments, she still has no results to show. She wasn't in school team, she didn't get an extra-ordinary results in the Dec competition, didn't managed to qualify for all-star, only gotten the experience of her first competition, and blisters which took weeks to recover.

We were encouraged by Yl's coach recommendation to be in the team's elite squad, despite her lack of experience and skills for most strokes. During the swim series events, her results are almost at the bottom of her age-group, she didn't swim her personal best like others in the squad. After the two swim series event, she gained experience how to minimise the chance of her goggles dropping upon dive, she learnt how to do warm up before her event, and I learnt how to take video and record her swim. I have also learnt to "digest" my own disappointment, pick myself up to give them the encouragements they need, and the acknowledgement they deserve. All these couldn't be justified with any tangible results in numbers.

For one of the most participated event in the Swim Series, "Girls aged 8-12 100m Freestyle", there were 21 Heats, each heats there were 10 swimmers, which means there's at least 200 over under-12 girls swimming competitively in whole of Singapore. But in each race, there could be only 3 standing on the podium. It is a cruel reality. So many girls and boys swim almost everyday to train for a 1-2 min event, and only maybe 1% would be able to get an award. It is similar in bowling, even though it seems like a less common sports. Many of the bowlers who gets better results, bowl everyday too. It is also a reality that for most of them, their parents have to invest time and money to give the child support, emotionally, mentally and physically (in terms of transport and equipments). Most parents and children, have to go through years of training and money thrown into multiple competition every year, without going up to any podium.

During one of the swim events, i was nagged by another parent if I had gotten a new goggles for Yl. Her current goggles, her only one suitable for competition, was gifted by her previous coach as an encouragement for her to be able to meet SSPA timings. After 3 months of usage, her goggles are already scratched and always loose,  which affected her performance in her last event. She said to me, "Equipment like goggles and swimsuit, is your responsibility." I have to agree. sighs, I have failed her to not have equipped her with the best. I am learning and trying my best. As my child grow and develop her skills and capabilities in the sport she is in, we will have to get the equipment necessary for her to succeed and that can match with her capabilities.

"So why are you all doing this, to get DSA ah?" -this is the most common questions I get from friends when i complained about the time and money I have to spend for the two sports girls at home. Most of the time, I couldn't give an answer, because I am not too sure myself and it is really more complicated than a simple one-line answer.

The most important reason would be (I think), they love the sport they do.

"Trying our best in whatever we do. " That is the only belief that kept me going while I have this constant struggle to justify my "investments" in these sports/ hobby they do.

Maybe, they will be one of the many 无名之辈 who will disappear in the arena even before their name can be remembered in this cruel competitive sports world. Maybe, they will hit their personal best in the future, but it is always never the best. It is ok (i tell myself). They will all learn the discipline and mental attitude to be able to succeed in life, and also at the same time equip themselves with a skill and have a story to tell for life.

My highly sensitive? child

Just when we thought Wanling seems to be settling down into her primary school, we started to face non-stop dramas and meltdowns with her "tantrums". It appeared suddenly sometime before CNY. And got worse after she hurt her chin during CNY. No significant events happened, she just suddenly had day and night, day after day of nonstop emotional meltdowns.

Sometimes it's because Yiling get to brush teeth first, sometimes it's because I didn't hold her hand to bring her into the toilet to bathe. Sometimes it's because she just couldn't tuck in her shirt right ( dun ask me what that means, I have no idea too), or the hair clip is not at the right position??😒.

We were at our wits end, and I have run out of all my patience to deal with all the outburst of emotions that happens every other seconds. Xl turned to one of our best friends, Google, and she pointed out that she could be a highly sensitive child.

According to this website https://www.google.com.sg/amp/s/happysensitivekids.com/2016/04/12/21-ways-to-recognise-a-highly-sensitive-child/amp/

  1. Your child often puts their hands over their ears to block out loud or uncomfortable noises like sirens, alarms or DIY sounds
Yes. She does this all the time. Esp if we insist to listen to songs she doesnt like.. does this count?

  1. Your child hides behind your legs or is clingy in unknown places, with unknown faces or in busy places.
All the time! Sometimes even at home!

  1. Your child is sensitive and highly reactive to pain.
We thought she is just trying to exaggerate to get more attention.

  1. Your child is the one retreating to a quiet corner at a birthday party.
We thought she is just extremely shy..

  1. You face inexplicable meltdowns after a school day.
Yes! Inexplicable

  1. Your child takes time to warm up when in the company of others – even people they know well.
All the time! Though it's much better now.

  1. Your child has great difficulty getting to sleep at night and in all likelihood has probably never been the best of night time sleepers, even as a baby.
Yes yes!

  1. Your child is irritated by clothes tags, sock seams or ‘scratchy’ clothes.
We thought she is just fussy

  1. Your child notices the details: if you move something in your front room, your child knows it. If you change your perfume, your child remarks on it.
Eh.. this one not so much I think...

  1. Your child cries when another child cries – or is visibly upset. They notice another person’s discomfort or feelings.
She dun really care abt others I think. But she is absolutely distressed if yankai cries non stop on car rides.

  1. Your child seems to prefer quiet games and enjoys their own company.
Yes!
  1. Your child is a picky eater and finds some textures and strong flavours unpalatable. definitely a picky eater !
  2. A busy playground is not attractive to your child. Your child observes whilst other children tear around from the slide to the swing to the climbing frame and back again. Your child is the cautious one – assessing the situation thoroughly before jumping or climbing.
Not so much now... but Yes, when she was a toddler
  1. Your child startles if you raise your voice at him.
She cries immediately when i raise my voice even just slightly

  1. Your child has a strong sense of smell.
Something we couldnt understand at all... she always say toilet is very smelly but we couldnt smell a thing....

  1. Teachers have told you that your child is shy, quiet or sensitive.
Yes.
  1. Grandparents tell you your child seems wise beyond her years.
Hmm ... sound more like yiling

  1. Your child has a perfectionist tendency.
A trait of hers that i really cant stand.. what is tuck in shirt correctly???

  1. Your child is not keen to perform in front of strangers. They don’t do as well in tests given my strangers as they do in the company of familiar faces.
Yes.
  1. Your child is immensely curious, constantly asking deep questions that you may not have the answer to.
Hmmm sounds more like yiling! Oh no, could she be highly sensitive too???

  1. Your child displays immense emotion. sometimes such deep emotion you just don’t get it.
I always dun get it...

All in all, for all the tests to check if a child is highly sensitive, she will display almost all the traits of a highly sensitive child. I think she is generally extremely sensitive to touch and smell and feelings, but not so observant and vocal.

It is a revelation to us. Because it might be true that she is not being difficult and fussy on purpose. It might be true that her senses are indeed much more sensitive than us, so she complains about the stitches at collars on t shirt itchy, even though we couldnt even feel the stitches. It might be the truth that she really couldn't stand the smell of the toilet so she can't brush teeth in the toilet, even though we can't smell any smell at all. It may be true that she is really painful, even though Yiling only slightly bump into her? She is not trying to exaggerate so we will give her more attention. She is not trying to make our life difficult, she just really couldn't help it.

But the next question is, what can we do? We can't be giving in to her everytime just because she is sensitive right? There should be a way we can teach her how to cope with her emos?? Haiz...

Patience.. I need more patience.....

Hong Kong 2017 with family

We just came back from Hong Kong. It's the first time 5 of us (first time flying for baby yan) plus my in laws.

On hindsight, i think we must be mad to bring the kids to hong kong for a week! Really, we should just stick to 3 days and disneyland only. The delicious hong kong food has no appeal to them at all, and we have to really go through A LOT to bring them to these places to have the "good food"
So, in conclusion, travelling with kids is absolutely different when travelling alone.
Travelling with kids shoud really be go to a point ( exciting enough for them), play and play, then go home. Food is not important, play is more important to them, walking and waiting is a chore.

But of course, i have no regrets. We already expect a tiring trip, but the bonding time we had together, and the memories we have shared are worth the trouble!
At our "holiday house" at hong kong.

And we went to the highly anticipated disneyland too. Lucky kids all of you, get to experience the disney magic at such a young age!

The case against breastfeeding

Wrote a super long post last night on fb...  was probably too tired and not thinking straight.. but here it is:

https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2009/04/the-case-against-breast-feeding/307311/

While reading through this long article late at night, baby cried. His daddy, just beside him, merely made a few "shh shh shh" sound, while his eyes and hands glued to his handphone playing his mobile game. I jumped out of the couch across the room to my baby (note my), feeling anger boiling inside me as i get on to my mummy duties.

Yes, i feel trapped, like how the article describes, i feel i am chained to the pump and imprisoned by the feeding schedule. And its true that exclusively breastfeeding makes me angry lots of time. (Esp when like what had just happened 😒)

Thats the main reason why i say, i feel like quitting everyday. xl say, i do have a choice. But i am still hanging on to "breastfeed as long as i can", and i dont really know why.

Maybe its the bonding with baby while feeding? Maybe I'm addicted to the skin to skin closeness, and his baby smell as we cuddle... they say, treasure it when we can, coz when kids grow up they will not want to be close to us anymore...

Maybe its the soliditary me time i am privileged to have when i breastfeed, latch or pump alike. Its really nice to be able to escape into my room, to pump or to feed, when the girls are fighting or throwing tantrum outside. Its also really nice to take a break in between work to pump, and play my mobile games or watch some show, some things i couldnt really do at any other time.

Maybe its the convenience to be able to latch anywhere.. ya, contradicting i know. Its freedom to go anywhere i want with baby, but trapped with him as well.

Maybe i am really brainwashed by all the "research" and "parental advice", that "breast is best". Although i really take it easy this time round.. i have already 看开 after my 2nd, i am mentally prepared to give formula if need to.. but ego will always be stroked if i am able to proudly declare "ya, my baby is exclusively breastfed" 😏

So, ya... here i am, like most female, who always contradict themselves, i hate to breastfeed but I'm gonna do it as long as i can..

Years later, when Facebook reminds me of this ridiculously long post i made at 1am... i may be laughing at myself..silly me, why i didnt sleep when i am already so sleep deprived.

How is life with three kids?

How's life with three kids?".

Wanling is a big girl now

Wanling is a big girl now, especially after carrying meimei, the difference in size is obvious. She is growing up fast!

Now she is at the stage that she sings non stop. .. she is noisy all the time!  a while ago, I was hoping she could sing songs. Now, I still think she's so cute when she's singing. Maybe a while later, I'll hope that she will keep quiet for a while. ..

So far, she has been a good sister. She smiles when she's carrying meimei. She runs to meimei whenever she cries. (Though I think she thought its fun to  哄her,  than she's really concerned about her) she will look for meimei the moment she reach home. And of course, there are some dark moments like she will sometimes cry and want me to carry her when I am feeding meimei. She will purposely squeeze or pinch meimei when we tell her not to. I think she loves meimei, just that she can't help feel jealous sometimes. Love her so much!

Sleep Training Part 2

This is the second week of her Sleep Training part 2. It officially started after our cruise holiday with Royal Caribbean. She is now going to be 15 months old, eating and enjoying solid food. My supply had dwindle since she turn 1 years old, I have a feeling she still latch on mainly for comfort so I started planning for this sleep train+ weaning off project during new year.

Step 1 To make her drink non-breast milk
She hates bottle. After trying for almost half a year of different brand and size of bottle and teat, we gave up and accepted the fact that she hates bottle. So once she turn 1 years old, we started trying fresh milk in cup with straw. She seems to like it, in some good days she can drink 120ml. However, my mother-in-law who is the main caregiver didn't like the idea that she is drinking cold drinks at such a young age, and blame her frequent running nose to the fresh milk. So we tried to give her formula milk in cup with straw instead. By chance, we manage to find one brand that she like, yeah! Simultaneously, we tried full cream milk in small packet. From all the trial and error, we found out that she likes strawberry milk, don't like chocolate milk. Just before the cruise during the last week of Feb, we have scheduled in 3 drink milk session in a day, either formula or packet full cream milk: breakfast, tea-break and supper. She still don't drink much, her usual intake is one packet of milk a day, that is about 250ml.

Step 2 Night time sleep without latching
After holiday is good time to instil new habits, because we have to re-instil old habits anyway after holidays. I decided to focus on night time sleeping, as I can outsource nap time to my MIL ;p. So for the past 2 weeks, I avoided to be with her during her nap time in the morning and afternoon. The bedtime routine is supper, read a story, change her diapers, off the light, on her bedtime light cum lullaby music, put her in her bed and kiss goodnight. The plan is to not offer until she forget about latching.

Result so far:
First night is terrible, I think she cried hysterically for half hr or so, refused to stay in her bed, she wanted me to carry and bring her to our room to sleep with us (post-holiday syndrome, we sleep together during the cruise holiday). I tried to sing lullaby to her, hug her and comforted her once in a while, tried to stay calm and firm. After a battle of about one and a half hour, she finally fall asleep on my head. I was too tired, so I rested my head on her mattress while sitting beside her bed watching her cry. She crawled to me, hug my head and cried for a while, then out of a sudden she stopped . After remaining still in that uncomfortable position for a minute or so, I carefully moved her hands and body away, she was already soundly asleep.

Subsequent nights got better, there were some nights she missed her afternoon naps, so she was very tired and fell asleep very fast. This weeks' improvement is significant.Once I announce to her that it's sleeping time after reading a story to her, she will climb up to her own bed and wait for me. There is no more crying, maybe a bit of whimper when she can't sleep after a while. She still take about an hour to fall asleep, she still needs me to be beside her before she falls asleep. But I am already happy that she no longer expect to be latched on to sleep, even when she wakes up briefly in the middle of night, she can go back to sleep very soon once she is assured that I am with her. I hope she will be able to make herself fall asleep faster soon.

Step 3 Nap time
Nap time is always a challenge. This will be next week homework and will be updated in Sleep Training part 3. I suppose she is already used to the idea of not latching at all, but I have not thought of a good nap time routine yet. Hmm...

Shopping!

my koala bear

this is the time I regret latch-on breastfeeding and also feel blissed at the same time . Wl is sleeping on me like a koala bear, clinging on to me and refused to let go..

I might miss these times when she's older... but now, I just want to be able to put her down.

After one hr of battle, I gave in again.
sleep training failed again today. I will try harder next time.

Sleep training

I stumbled upon this article which I feel I must share:
https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-training/sleep-training-selfishishness-checklist/

I shouted "yes!" for most on the checklist, especially number 10 "10. I laugh with my baby more when I’ve gotten enough some sleep." Haha....like " enough some sleep."a lot!

I struggled with training WL to sleep constantly. I had enjoyed some brief success when she's about 3 months old, after 2 weeks of persistent sleep training, establishing sleeping habits while her grandparents were away for holidays. However, as she grew a bit older some habits were "broken" and I start to experience inertia to sleep train her again.

Ok, I need to train her to sleep independently!

Before I start on this difficult task, there are 2 problems I need to ponder on:
1) Should I be the one to do the closing?
Because of my work, I should not be at home most of the time at night before her normal bedtime. I know some of my colleagues don't do the closing so they could go for appt at night, others adjust their work schedule such that they will be at home before bedtime. Right now, I go for night appts occasionally and XL will make WL slp when I am not around. Because it is just occasionally, WL actually still wait for me, even if she fall asleep, she'll wake up when I reach home.

2) Should I still nurse her for her last feed?
One of her strongest sleep association is "nursing". Two problems: 1) I won't know how to make her sleep if she refuse breast, when she's not hungry or when I have low supply. 2) She'd need me to make her sleep. = bad habit? One issue is she don't like bottle. This lead to two issues: 1) I have to continue breastfeeding, 2) I cant replace last feed to formula, many people suggested that this will help her sleep longer at night. Sigh... dunno what to do with this problem.

....
Probably I need to think of one habit that has nothing to do with me.
